Getting Apple TV on your Samsung TV takes about five minutes - and you probably don't need to download anything. Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 onward come with the Apple TV app built right in, giving you access to Apple Originals, your iTunes library, and streaming content without buying any additional hardware.
I've tested the Apple TV app across multiple Samsung models, from budget Crystal UHD sets to flagship QD-OLED displays. The experience varies slightly depending on your TV's age and specs, but the core functionality works identically. This guide covers everything from initial setup to fixing common problems, with current pricing and compatibility information verified for February 2026.
Quick Start: Get Apple TV on Samsung TV in 5 Minutes
Compatible: Samsung Smart TVs 2017-2026
Time Required: 5-10 minutes

Here's the fastest way to start streaming:
Press the Home button on your Samsung remote to access your Samsung TV settings menu

Find Apple TV in your app list (pre-installed on 2019+ models) or search for it

What Is Apple TV? App vs Subscription vs Device Explained
The naming around Apple TV confuses almost everyone. Apple uses "Apple TV" to describe three completely different things, and understanding the distinction saves you money.
The Apple TV App is free software that comes pre-installed on Samsung Smart TVs. Think of it as Apple's version of the Netflix app - it's just the player you use to access content. You don't pay anything to have it on your TV.
Apple TV (the streaming service) is what most people actually mean. Formerly called Apple TV+, it's Apple's subscription streaming platform featuring original shows like Severance, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Slow Horses. This costs $12.99/month or $99.99/year as of February 2026.
Apple TV 4K (the hardware device) is a $129-$149 black box you connect via HDMI. Samsung TV owners don't need this - your TV already runs the app natively. The hardware is primarily for people with non-smart TVs or those who want Apple's superior tvOS interface.
Here's what's actually included with an Apple TV subscription:
Apple Originals (exclusive series and films)
Friday Night Baseball (seasonal)
MLS Season Pass (every match)
F1 coverage (all practices, qualifying, races - US only)
Apple TV Channels (add-on subscriptions like Paramount+ and STARZ)
Like Amazon Prime on Samsung TV, the Apple TV app comes pre-installed on supported models and provides access to streaming content without additional hardware purchases.
Samsung TV Apple TV Compatibility: Complete 2017-2026 Model List
Samsung started supporting the Apple TV app in 2017, but not every Samsung TV from that era works. The compatibility depends on your specific model and whether your TV runs Tizen OS.
To find your model number, navigate to Samsung TV settings, then select Support > About This TV. Your model code contains a letter that indicates the manufacturing year.
How to decode Samsung model numbers:
Letter | Year | Example Models |
|---|---|---|
H | 2026 | S95H, S90H, S85H, QN900H, QN85H, R85H |
F | 2025 | S95F, S90F, S85F, QN900F, QN85F, DU series |
D | 2024 | S95D, S90D, S85D, QN900D, QN85D, DU9000, DU8000 |
C | 2023 | S95C, S90C, QN900C, QN85C, CU8000 |
B | 2022 | S95B, QN900B, QN85B, BU8000 |
A | 2021 | QN900A, QN85A, AU9000, AU8000 |
T | 2020 | Q950T, Q900T, Q80T, Q70T, Q60T, TU8000 |
R | 2019 | Q900R, Q90R, Q80R, Q70R, Q60R, RU8000 |
N | 2018 | Q9FN, Q8FN, Q7FN, Q6FN, NU8000, NU7000 |
M | 2017 | Q7F, Q8F, Q9F, MU8000 (Apple TV app only, no AirPlay) |
Important limitations: 2017 Samsung TVs support the Apple TV app but lack AirPlay 2 functionality. You can stream content through the app, but screen mirroring from your iPhone won't work. AirPlay 2 support begins with 2018 models.
If the Apple TV app doesn't appear despite having a compatible model, you may need to update apps on Samsung TV by navigating to Settings > Support > Software Update.
How to Download and Install the Apple TV App on Samsung TV
Installation differs based on your TV's age. Newer models have the app pre-installed, while older sets require a manual download.
For 2019-2026 Samsung TVs (Pre-Installed)
The Apple TV app already exists on your TV. You just need to find it:
Press the Home button on your Samsung remote
Navigate left to the Apps icon
Look through Featured or scroll to find Apple TV
Select the app to open it
To pin it permanently, highlight the app, press and hold Enter, then select Add to Home
If the app doesn't appear, don't panic. Sometimes it takes a moment to populate after initial TV setup. Give it ten minutes, then check again.
For 2017-2018 Samsung TVs (Download Required)
Older models require downloading from the Samsung app store:
Press the Home button
Navigate to Apps
Select the Search icon (magnifying glass in the upper right)
Type "Apple TV" using the on-screen keyboard
Select Apple TV from the search results
Press Install or Download
Wait for installation to complete (usually under a minute)
After installation, you can add apps to Samsung TV home screen by highlighting the app in your Apps section, pressing and holding the Enter button, and selecting Add to Home.
Prerequisites
Before starting, make sure you have:
A stable internet connection (minimum 8 Mbps for HD, 25 Mbps for 4K)
A Samsung Account (free to create)
An Apple ID (create one at appleid.apple.com if needed)
If your Samsung TV not connecting to WiFi, resolve that first - you can't access any streaming apps without network connectivity.
How to Sign In to Apple TV on Samsung TV with Your Apple ID
Apple offers two authentication methods, and the QR code option is genuinely faster if you have an iPhone nearby.
Method 1: QR Code Sign-In (Recommended)
Open the Apple TV app on your Samsung TV
Navigate to Settings (gear icon) then Accounts
Select Sign In
Choose Sign In On Mobile Device
A QR code appears on your TV screen
Open your iPhone camera and point it at the QR code
Tap the notification that appears on your phone
Confirm sign-in using Face ID or Touch ID
Your TV automatically completes authentication
The entire process takes about thirty seconds. Your Apple ID credentials never touch your Samsung TV directly, which is a nice security bonus.
Method 2: Web Activation
If you don't have an iPhone or prefer manual entry:
Open the Apple TV app on your Samsung TV
Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign In
A six-character code displays on screen
On any device, visit activate.apple.com
Enter the code exactly as shown
Sign in with your Apple ID and password
Complete two-factor authentication if prompted
Your TV confirms successful sign-in
Two-Factor Authentication: If you have 2FA enabled (you should), you'll receive a verification code on your trusted devices. Enter this code when prompted during web activation.
Note: While Apple ID handles your streaming content, your Samsung account for TV manages Samsung-specific features like Universal Guide and SmartThings integration. These are separate accounts serving different purposes.
How to Use AirPlay 2 to Stream from iPhone, iPad & Mac to Samsung TV
AirPlay 2 lets you wirelessly send content from Apple devices to your Samsung TV. It's built into all Samsung Smart TVs from 2018 onward - 2017 models don't support this feature.
Enable AirPlay on Your Samsung TV
Before streaming anything, verify AirPlay is turned on:
Press Home on your remote
Navigate to Settings (gear icon)
Select General (or Connection on 2022+ models)
Choose Apple AirPlay Settings
Turn AirPlay to ON
Set Require Code to your preference (First Time, Every Time, or Never)
AirPlay from iPhone or iPad
Once AirPlay is enabled on your TV:
Ensure your iPhone/iPad and Samsung TV are on the same Wi-Fi network
Open the content you want to stream (Photos, Videos, or a streaming app)
Tap the Share icon, then select AirPlay
Choose your Samsung TV from the device list
Enter the code displayed on your TV if prompted
Screen Mirroring from iPhone or iPad
To mirror your entire screen rather than specific content:
Swipe down from the top-right corner (iPhone X and later) or up from the bottom (older iPhones) to open Control Center
Tap the Screen Mirroring icon (two overlapping rectangles)
Select your Samsung TV from the list
Enter the code if prompted
Your iPhone screen now appears on your TV
AirPlay from Mac
Click the AirPlay icon in your Mac's menu bar (or open Control Center and select Screen Mirroring)
Select your Samsung TV
Choose Mirror Display or Extend Display depending on your needs
Content begins streaming immediately
Streaming vs. Mirroring: Streaming sends specific content while your phone remains usable. Mirroring shows your entire screen, including notifications and everything you do. Use streaming for videos and photos, mirroring for presentations or demos.
If you're an Android user, you'll need to screen mirror Samsung to Samsung TV using Smart View instead of AirPlay - the technology only works with Apple devices.

Premium Bundle: $14.99/month (Apple TV + Peacock Premium)
Premium Plus Bundle: $19.99/month (Apple TV + Peacock Premium Plus, which removes most ads)
This saves over 30% compared to subscribing separately.
T-Mobile Customers
T-Mobile ended its completely free Apple TV+ offer in January 2026. Eligible customers on qualifying plans now pay $3/month after a $9.99 discount. Full-price billing begins June 2026.
What's Included
Your subscription covers:
All Apple Originals (Severance, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Slow Horses, and hundreds more)
Friday Night Baseball (two MLB games every Friday during regular season)
MLS Season Pass (every Major League Soccer match)
F1 coverage (every practice, qualifying session, and race - US only)
Family Sharing for up to 6 people
At $12.99/month, Apple TV sits between Netflix on Samsung TV (which starts at $7.99 with ads) and premium tiers from competitors. The library is smaller than Netflix or Disney Plus on Samsung TV, but Apple focuses on quality over quantity - and the sports additions add genuine value for sports on Samsung TV fans.
4K HDR, Dolby Atmos & Picture Quality Settings on Samsung TV
The Apple TV app supports 4K HDR streaming on compatible Samsung TVs. Getting the best picture requires proper settings and sufficient internet speed.
Requirements for 4K Streaming
Internet speed: Minimum 25 Mbps (test at fast.com through your TV's browser)
TV capability: 4K Samsung Smart TV (2017 or newer)
Content: Look for the 4K/HDR badge next to titles
Understanding HDR on Samsung TVs
Samsung TVs support HDR10 and HDR10+. Here's what happens with different content:
HDR10 content plays natively
HDR10+ content plays with dynamic metadata
Dolby Vision content automatically converts to HDR10 or HDR10+ (Samsung doesn't support native Dolby Vision)
This conversion happens seamlessly. You'll still get excellent picture quality, though purists note that native Dolby Vision on LG or Sony TVs produces marginally better results in some scenes.
Recommended Picture Settings
For the most accurate colors when streaming Apple TV content, configure your best picture settings Samsung 4K TV like this:
Set Picture Mode to Filmmaker Mode (most accurate) or Movie
Adjust Backlight based on room lighting (higher for bright rooms, lower for dark)
Disable Motion Smoothing (Picture Clarity Settings > Motion Enhancement > Off)
Keep HDR settings on Samsung TV](https://techjunctions.com/samsung-tv-hdr-settings/) at default unless you notice issues
You can fine-tune your Samsung TV brightness settings based on your viewing environment, but avoid cranking everything to maximum - it often washes out the image.
Dolby Atmos Audio
Apple TV supports Dolby Atmos spatial audio on compatible content. To enable it:
Connect a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar via HDMI eARC
Navigate to Settings > Sound > Expert Settings
Enable HDMI eARC Mode
Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass Through
Your soundbar must support Dolby Atmos, and your HDMI connection must use the eARC port (usually HDMI 3 on Samsung TVs).

Apple TV App vs Apple TV 4K Box: Do You Need Both?
Short answer: No. If you own a Samsung Smart TV from 2017 or later, you don't need the $129+ Apple TV 4K hardware. The free app provides access to the same streaming content.
But "don't need" isn't the same as "shouldn't buy." Here's an honest comparison.
What the Free Samsung App Does
Streams all Apple Originals and Apple TV+ content
Accesses purchased/rented iTunes movies and shows
Supports Apple TV Channels subscriptions
Plays content in 4K HDR (HDR10/HDR10+ on Samsung)
Works with Family Sharing
What the Free App Doesn't Do
No Apple Arcade gaming
No Apple Fitness+ workouts
No HomeKit hub functionality
No Siri voice control (Samsung uses Bixby/Alexa)
Interface designed by Samsung, not Apple
Software updates depend on Samsung's schedule
HDR converts Dolby Vision to HDR10
What the Apple TV 4K Device Adds
Native tvOS interface (faster, more polished)
Apple Arcade with controller support
Apple Fitness+ workouts on the big screen
HomeKit hub for smart home control
Siri Remote with voice commands
Direct software updates from Apple
Native Dolby Vision support
Longer software support lifecycle
For users who want wireless audio features, you can still connect AirPods to Samsung TV whether you're using the app or the hardware device.
Who Should Consider the Apple TV 4K Hardware
User Type | Recommendation |
|---|---|
Casual streamers | Samsung app is sufficient |
Apple ecosystem users | Consider Apple TV 4K for integration |
Gamers | Apple TV 4K for Apple Arcade |
Fitness enthusiasts | Apple TV 4K for Fitness+ |
Home theater purists | Apple TV 4K for Dolby Vision & performance |
Smart home users | Apple TV 4K for HomeKit hub |
Verdict
For most Samsung TV owners who just want to watch Severance and Ted Lasso, the free app works perfectly. Save your $129.
If you're deeply invested in Apple's ecosystem - using HomeKit, Apple Arcade, or Fitness+ - the hardware makes your living room more integrated. It's a nice-to-have, not a necessity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Apple TV app free on Samsung TV?
Yes, the Apple TV app is completely free to download and use on Samsung Smart TVs from 2017-2026. The app itself costs nothing. Some content, like purchased iTunes movies, displays without a subscription.
Can I buy movies on Apple TV on Samsung TV?
Yes, you can purchase and rent movies and TV shows directly through the Apple TV app on Samsung Smart TVs from 2018 or newer. Navigate to the iTunes Store section within the app, select your content, and complete the purchase using your Apple ID. Note that 2017 Samsung models have limited store functionality and are best suited for streaming only.
Why does Apple TV keep crashing on Samsung TV?
Apple TV typically crashes due to four common causes:
Outdated TV firmware - update at Settings > Support > Software Update
Corrupted app cache - reinstall from the Apps menu
Network instability - check your connection at Settings > Network > Network Status
Smart Hub glitch - reset at Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Reset Smart Hub
Can I use Apple TV without an Apple ID?

How do I update the Apple TV app on Samsung TV?
Press Home
Navigate to Apps
Select Settings (gear icon)
Find Apple TV
Select Update (if available)
Alternatively, enable auto-updates: Apps > Settings > Auto Update > On.
Can multiple people use Apple TV on Samsung TV?
Yes. Apple TV supports up to six user profiles through Family Sharing. Each family member gets personalized recommendations and their own Up Next queue. Set up Family Sharing through Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Is Apple TV on Samsung in 4K?
Yes, Apple TV streams in 4K with HDR on compatible Samsung TVs. Look for the 4K/HDR badge next to content titles in the app. You'll need a minimum 25 Mbps internet connection and a 4K Samsung TV (2017 or newer). Samsung supports HDR10 and HDR10+; Dolby Vision content automatically converts to these formats.
Conclusion & Next Steps
Getting Apple TV working on your Samsung Smart TV genuinely takes just a few minutes. Whether you own a brand-new S95H OLED or an older 2017 QLED, the process is nearly identical: find the app, sign in with your Apple ID, and start streaming.
For most Samsung owners, the free app provides everything needed to enjoy Apple Originals, F1 races, MLS matches, and your iTunes library without buying additional hardware. The $12.99/month subscription delivers a curated library of quality content - fewer shows than Netflix, but consistently excellent production value.
If you run into problems, the troubleshooting section above covers every issue I've encountered across years of testing. When in doubt, a cold boot (holding the power button for 5 seconds) fixes most glitches, and a Smart Hub reset resolves nearly everything else.
