How the calculator works
The right TV size comes down to how much of your view the screen fills from your seat. SMPTE, the film and TV engineering body, recommends at least a 30° viewing angle for everyday watching. THX recommends up to 40° for a cinema feel.
The calculator turns those angles into inches and feet. Tell it how far you sit and it gives the screen sizes that hit each angle; tell it your TV’s size and it gives the range of seats. A 4K screen has four times the pixels of 1080p, so you can sit closer, or go bigger, before the picture looks soft.
Common questions
How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?
For a 65-inch 4K TV, a comfortable range is roughly 5.5 to 8 feet (1.7-2.4 m). Sit toward the closer end for a more immersive, cinema-like field of view, and toward the far end for a relaxed, mixed-use setup. The calculator gives you an exact range for any size.
Can you sit closer to a 4K TV than a 1080p TV?
Yes. Because a 4K panel packs four times the pixels of 1080p, individual pixels stay invisible at much closer distances. That means you can comfortably use a larger screen—or sit closer to the same screen—without the image looking soft or pixelated.
What viewing angle should I aim for?
SMPTE recommends a horizontal viewing angle of at least 30 degrees for a balanced experience, while THX recommends up to 40 degrees for a more immersive, theater-like feel. Bigger screens (or sitting closer) increase the angle; this tool converts those targets into real screen sizes and distances.
