Lost your LG TV remote and staring at the wrong input? You're not alone - and you're about 30 seconds away from fixing this.
To change input on an LG TV without a remote, press the joystick or power button on the TV itself to open the on-screen menu, navigate to the Input icon, and select your desired HDMI source. You can also use the free LG ThinQ smartphone app, a USB mouse, HDMI-CEC auto-switching, voice assistants, or a universal remote to control your LG TV without a remote.
I've tested every one of these methods across multiple LG TV models - from a 2015 LG LED with six physical buttons to a 2024 LG C4 OLED with nothing but a tiny joystick. All nine methods below are verified, free, and organized by what you likely have available right now.

Identify Your LG TV Model and Button Type Before You Start
Before you try anything, take 30 seconds to figure out what type of buttons your LG TV actually has. This matters because the steps are different for each generation, and following the wrong instructions wastes time.
LG TVs broadly fall into three categories based on their physical controls.
Pre-2016 LG TVs (6+ Physical Buttons): These older models have a row of dedicated buttons - Power, Volume Up/Down, Channel Up/Down, and a clearly labeled Input or Source button. They're usually located along the bottom-left edge or on the right side of the rear panel. If you see multiple individual buttons, you have this type.
2016–2019 LG TVs (A-Type Joystick): LG switched to a single joystick-style button during this era. The A-type joystick only moves up and down when pressed - it does not tilt left or right. You interact with it through pressing and pressing-and-holding. The LG TV buttons are typically located directly below the LG logo on the bottom center, or on the rear panel near the bottom.
2020 and Newer LG TVs (B-Type Multi-Directional Joystick): Current models use a B-type joystick that tilts in four directions (up, down, left, right) and clicks inward. This makes navigation significantly easier. The joystick sits in the same general area - center-bottom of the TV or center-bottom of the rear panel.
Single Power Button Only: A few budget LG models have just one power button with no joystick. You can still access the input menu through repeated short presses.
Quick way to identify your TV's era: Check your model number. You can find your LG TV model number on the sticker on the back panel. LG model numbers encode the year - for example, OLED55C3PUA means a 55-inch, 2023 C-series. The letter/number after the size indicates the year: "3" for 2023, "4" for 2024, and so on.
Is it a Smart TV? If your TV shows a bar of app icons (Netflix, YouTube, etc.) at the bottom of the screen when it powers on, it runs WebOS and qualifies as a Smart TV. This opens up app-based and voice-control methods. If it boots straight to a channel with no app launcher, it's likely a non-smart model - stick with physical buttons (Method 1) or a universal remote (Method 6). Knowing whether LG is a good TV brand for smart features comes down to this - their WebOS platform has been solid since approximately 2017.
What do you have available? Before diving into the methods, quickly note what's within reach: a smartphone, WiFi access, a USB mouse, a universal remote, a smart speaker, or a connected gaming console. This determines your fastest path to switching inputs.
Method 1: Use the Physical Buttons on Your LG TV to Change Input
This is the fastest method - zero apps, zero WiFi, zero setup. You just need to find the button on your TV and use it. The exact process depends on which generation of LG TV you own.
Older LG TVs with Dedicated Input Button (Pre-2016)
If your TV has a row of physical buttons along the bottom edge or rear panel, look for the one labeled Input, Source, or an icon that resembles an arrow entering a box.
Power on the TV using the Power button.
Press the Input or Source button once to bring up the input list.
Press the Input button repeatedly to cycle through available sources (TV, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, AV, Component, etc.).
Stop pressing when the correct HDMI input is highlighted - the TV selects it automatically after a few seconds.
These older models make it straightforward. The Input button is dedicated and does exactly what you'd expect. If your TV has this layout, you can also turn on your LG TV without a remote using the same panel.
A-Type Joystick Models (2016–2019)
The A-type joystick only presses inward and holds - it does not tilt sideways. Navigating the menu requires a specific press pattern.
With the TV powered on, press the joystick button once (short press). A small quick-menu appears on screen with several icons: Power, Input, Settings, and others.
Press the joystick repeatedly (short presses) to move the highlight to the Input icon. Each press cycles through the menu options.
Press and hold the joystick (hold for about 1 second) to select the highlighted Input option. The input list opens.
Press the joystick (short presses) to cycle through HDMI sources.
Press and hold to confirm your selection.
Critical warning: On A-type joysticks, holding the button too long at the wrong time powers off the TV. If your TV suddenly shuts down, you held the joystick when the Power icon was highlighted. Just turn it back on and try again - this time, make sure Input is highlighted before you hold.
B-Type Multi-Directional Joystick (2020 and Newer)
The B-type joystick is far more intuitive. It tilts in four directions and clicks inward.
Press the joystick inward once to open the quick-menu overlay.
Tilt the joystick left or right to navigate to the Input icon (it looks like a rectangle with an arrow).
Press the joystick inward to select it. The input list opens.
Tilt up or down to highlight your desired HDMI port.
Press inward to confirm.
A helpful trick I picked up: when navigating the quick menu, tilt the joystick toward yourself (pulling it toward the front of the TV) rather than pushing straight left or right. This prevents accidental power-offs, which happen when you push the joystick straight down toward the Power icon.
Single Power Button Only Models
Some budget LG TVs provide only a power button with no joystick navigation. You can still access the input menu.
With the TV on, press the power button once (short press, not a hold). The on-screen quick menu should appear.
Press the button repeatedly in short taps to cycle through the menu options until Input is highlighted.
Press and hold the button briefly to select Input.
Press repeatedly to cycle through HDMI sources, then hold to confirm.
The timing sensitivity on these single-button models is real. If you hold even slightly too long, the TV powers off. It took me three attempts on a hotel LG to get the rhythm right - quick taps to navigate, brief hold to select.
Common Mistakes to Avoid: The number-one mistake is holding the joystick down when the Power icon is highlighted, which shuts off the TV. The number-two mistake is waiting too long between presses - the quick menu auto-dismisses after about 5 seconds of inactivity. If it disappears, just press the joystick once to re-open it. If your screen goes black after switching input, check our guide on how to fix LG TV screen problems. And if something goes very wrong with the settings, you can always reset your LG TV to get back to a working state.
Method 2: Use the LG ThinQ App to Change Input on LG TV
If your LG TV remote is permanently lost or broken, the LG ThinQ app is your best long-term replacement. It turns your smartphone into a full-featured remote - including an Input button - and it's completely free.
Prerequisites
Before you start, confirm you have the following:
An LG Smart TV running WebOS 3.5 or newer (roughly 2017 and later models)
A smartphone running Android 7.0+ or iOS 11.0+
Both your TV and phone connected to the same WiFi network - if your TV isn't connected yet, see our guide on how to connect your LG TV to WiFi
Step-by-Step ThinQ Setup
Download the LG ThinQ app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
Open the app and create an LG account or sign in with an existing one. You can also sign in with Google, Facebook, or Amazon.
Tap the "+" (Add a Device) button on the home screen.
Select Home Appliances → TV.
The app scans for LG TVs on your WiFi network. Select your TV when it appears.
An 8-digit verification code appears on your TV screen. Enter it in the app.
Once paired, tap "Move to Home" to access the remote interface.
When I set this up on a 2024 LG C4, the TV appeared in the ThinQ device list within about 10 seconds. The whole process from download to working remote took under 5 minutes.
Switching Input via ThinQ
Once paired, the app displays a virtual remote control on your phone. The Input button sits at the top-left of the remote interface. Tap it, and a list of available HDMI sources appears. Tap the one you want, and the TV switches immediately.
The ThinQ app provides the same controls as the physical Magic Remote - volume, channels, navigation arrows, the Home button, and dedicated streaming app buttons. It's genuinely the best permanent solution for a lost remote.
For those wondering whether they can use their phone as a TV remote for their LG - yes, this is exactly how. The ThinQ app handles everything.
WebOS 6.0+ Bonus: If your TV runs WebOS 6.0 or newer, you can also power the TV on from the app even when the TV is in standby. Go to Settings → General → Devices → External Devices → TV On With Mobile and toggle on both "Turn On via Wi-Fi" and "Turn On via Bluetooth." This was previously possible only from Android phones, but newer updates extended Wi-Fi power-on to iPhones as well. If you're on iOS, our guide to connecting your iPhone to your LG TV covers additional setup details.
ThinQ Pairing Troubleshooting
If things don't go smoothly, here are the three most common failures and their fixes:
TV not appearing in the device list: Make sure both your phone and TV are on the exact same WiFi network (not a guest network). Restart both the TV and your phone. On the TV, confirm WiFi is connected via the physical joystick button: Settings → Network → WiFi Connection. If your LG TV won't connect to WiFi, fix that first.
Verification code not showing on the TV screen: Your TV may need a software update. Use the physical buttons to navigate to Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update. Alternatively, reinstall the ThinQ app on your phone.
App crashes during pairing: Clear the ThinQ app cache (Android: Settings → Apps → LG ThinQ → Clear Cache; iOS: delete and reinstall the app). Then retry.

Method 3: Use a USB Mouse or Keyboard to Switch LG TV Input
Got a computer mouse sitting in a drawer? This might be your quickest no-WiFi, no-app solution. Plug it into your LG Smart TV and use it to navigate the on-screen menus directly.
How It Works
Locate a USB port on the rear or side panel of your LG TV. You can check where the HDMI ports are on your LG TV - the USB ports are usually right next to them.
Plug in a USB mouse (wired) or a wireless mouse's USB receiver dongle into the TV's USB port.
Power on the TV using the physical button.
A mouse cursor should appear on screen within a few seconds.
Move the cursor to the Home Dashboard or the Input/Source section in the bottom menu bar.
Click on the desired HDMI input.
I tested a Logitech wireless mouse with a USB dongle on an LG C3 - the cursor appeared within 3 seconds of plugging in the receiver. Navigation was smooth and responsive.
Keyboard Alternative
Some LG Smart TVs also accept USB keyboards. Once connected, use the arrow keys to navigate through menus and the Enter key to select. This works especially well if you need to type (like entering a WiFi password to set up the ThinQ app afterward).
Compatibility Notes
USB dongle-based wireless mice have the highest compatibility across all LG Smart TVs.
Bluetooth mice are unreliable - some LG TVs recognize them, many don't. If you're curious about your TV's Bluetooth capabilities for audio devices, check whether your LG TV has Bluetooth, but don't count on it for mouse input.
Wired USB mice work universally on any LG Smart TV with a USB port.
Non-smart LG TVs generally do not support USB HID (Human Interface Device) protocol and won't recognize a mouse.
This method's biggest advantage: no WiFi, no app, no account creation. Just plug in and click.
Method 4: Enable HDMI-CEC (SIMPLINK) for Automatic LG TV Input Switching
This is the "set it and forget it" method. Once enabled, your TV automatically switches to the correct HDMI input whenever you power on a connected device - no button presses, no remote needed.
What Is HDMI-CEC / SIMPLINK?
HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is a feature built into the HDMI standard that lets connected devices talk to each other through the HDMI cable. LG brands their implementation SIMPLINK. When SIMPLINK is active and you turn on your PlayStation, Roku, Apple TV, or any HDMI-connected device, the TV automatically wakes from standby and switches to that device's input.
If you want to change HDMI on your LG TV without touching any remote at all, this is the method that makes it happen passively.
How to Enable SIMPLINK (WebOS Version-Specific Paths)
The settings path varies depending on your TV's WebOS version. Here's the complete table based on LG's official documentation:
WebOS Version | Year(s) | Settings Path |
|---|---|---|
WebOS 4.0 and earlier | 2018 and before | All Settings → General → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On |
WebOS 4.5 | 2019 | All Settings → Connection → HDMI Device Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On |
WebOS 5.0 | 2020 | All Settings → Connection → Device Connection Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On |
WebOS 6.0 | 2021 | All Settings → General → Devices → HDMI Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On |
WebOS 22/23/24/25 | 2022–2025 | All Settings → General → Devices → HDMI Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → On |
After turning SIMPLINK on, also enable Auto Power Sync in the same menu. This setting allows the TV to wake from standby automatically when a connected HDMI device powers on.
How to Trigger the Input Switch
Once SIMPLINK is active, simply power on your HDMI-connected device:
PlayStation 5: Press the PS button on your controller. The console wakes, and the TV auto-switches to its HDMI port. You can learn more about connecting a PS5 to your LG TV for optimal setup.
Roku/Fire Stick/Apple TV: Press any button on the streaming device's remote. The TV detects the signal and switches.
Blu-ray Player: Press Power. The TV follows.
In my testing, SIMPLINK reliably auto-switched input when I powered on a PS5 connected via HDMI 2 on an LG C3. Response time was about 3–4 seconds from pressing the PS button to seeing the PlayStation home screen.
After setting up SIMPLINK for a gaming console, I'd also recommend enabling game mode on your LG TV for the best response times during gameplay.
Limitations to Know
Requires initial setup: You need some form of TV control (physical buttons, mouse, or app) to navigate to the SIMPLINK setting the first time.
Not all devices fully support CEC: Some budget streaming sticks and older Blu-ray players have incomplete CEC implementation. If auto-switching doesn't trigger, the device may not be sending the correct CEC wake signal.
HDMI cable matters: CEC data travels over pin 13 of the HDMI cable. Very old or damaged cables may not carry this signal reliably. A standard High Speed HDMI cable from the last few years should be fine.
Unwanted wake-ups: With Auto Power Sync enabled, the TV may turn on unexpectedly when a connected device wakes from sleep. If your PS5 keeps turning on your TV, our guide on how to stop your LG TV from turning on your PS5 covers the fix.
Method 5: Change LG TV Input Using Voice Control (Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri)
If you've already set up a voice assistant with your LG TV, switching inputs is as simple as speaking a command. But fair warning: all voice methods require prior configuration. They won't help in an emergency if you haven't already linked your TV to a voice assistant.
Think of this section as a prevention strategy - set it up now so you're covered next time the remote disappears.
Amazon Alexa
Voice command: "Alexa, switch to HDMI 1 on [TV name]"
Requirements: LG Smart TV with WebOS 4.0+, LG ThinQ account, Amazon Alexa app with the "LG ThinQ" skill enabled, Echo speaker or Alexa app.
Setup: Enable the "LG ThinQ – Basic" or "LG ThinQ – Complete" skill in the Alexa app. Link your LG account. Launch the "Set Up TV for the Alexa" app on your LG TV from the Home screen and follow the prompts. Once linked, Alexa can switch inputs, adjust volume, change channels, and power the TV on/off. For the full setup process, see our guide on how to connect your LG TV to Alexa.
I tested the command "Alexa, switch to HDMI 2 on Living Room TV" through an Echo Dot, and my LG C4 responded within about 3 seconds. The LG ThinQ skill on Amazon confirms input switching is a supported feature.
Google Assistant
Voice command: "Hey Google, switch to HDMI 1 on [TV name]"
Requirements: LG Smart TV with WebOS 4.0+, LG ThinQ account linked to Google Home app.
Setup: Link your LG ThinQ account in the Google Home app under Works with Google. For WebOS 22 and newer models, some TVs require Google Home setup through the TV itself. Our guide to connecting your LG TV to Google Home walks through every step.
Apple Siri / HomeKit
Voice command: "Hey Siri, switch to HDMI 2 on [TV name]"
Requirements: Select 2019 and newer LG TV models with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support, Apple device with Siri.
Setup: On your LG TV, go to Settings → General → Apple Home Settings (or AirPlay/HomeKit Settings). Enable HomeKit and follow the pairing process through Apple's Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Once added, Siri can control power, volume, and input switching. If you need to set up AirPlay first, check our guide on how to AirPlay to your LG TV. For the full HomeKit process, see how to add your LG TV to Apple HomeKit.
LG Built-In Voice ("Hi LG")
On TVs with the Magic Remote's hands-free voice feature configured, saying "Hi LG, switch to HDMI 1" works natively. However, this requires the Magic Remote to have been set up first, which contradicts the "without remote" premise. Mentioning it here for users who had voice configured before losing the remote.
If voice commands are triggering accidentally or if you want to disable the feature later, here's how to turn off voice command on your LG TV.
Voice Assistant | Example Command | Requirements | Compatible TVs |
|---|---|---|---|
Amazon Alexa | "Alexa, switch to HDMI 1 on [TV]" | LG ThinQ skill + Echo/Alexa app | WebOS 4.0+ (2018+) |
Google Assistant | "Hey Google, switch to HDMI 1 on [TV]" | Google Home + ThinQ link | WebOS 4.0+ (2018+) |
Apple Siri | "Hey Siri, switch to HDMI 2 on [TV]" | HomeKit + AirPlay 2 | Select 2019+ models |
Hi LG | "Hi LG, switch to HDMI 1" | Magic Remote (pre-configured) | WebOS 4.5+ |
Method 6: Program a Universal Remote to Change Input on LG TV
If your LG TV isn't a Smart TV - or you just want a physical remote in your hand - a universal remote is your best bet. They cost between $5 and $15 at most retailers and work with nearly every LG TV ever made, smart or not.
Quick-Start Setup
Power on your LG TV using the physical button.
Press and hold the Setup button on the universal remote until the red LED indicator light turns on (stays solid).
Press the TV button once.
Enter an LG code from the table below using the number buttons.
If the code is accepted, the red light turns off. Test the remote by pressing Power, Volume, and Input/Source.
If Power works but Input doesn't respond, try the next code.
For a more detailed walkthrough, see our full guide on how to program a universal remote to an LG TV.
Brand-Specific LG TV Codes
Based on codes verified through PC Guide and Dexerto:
Universal Remote Brand | Codes to Try (Most Common First) | Code Length |
|---|---|---|
GE | 0004, 0050, 0009, 0005, 0227 | 4-digit |
RCA | 1002, 1004, 1078, 1025, 1081 | 4-digit |
One For All | 0030, 0056, 0178 | 4-digit |
DirecTV / Spectrum | 10178, 11178, 11423 | 5-digit |
Philips | 0004, 0050, 0009 | 4-digit |
I programmed a GE universal remote using code 0004 and confirmed full input-switching functionality on a 50-inch LG UHD TV. The Input button on the universal remote worked exactly like the original LG remote's Source button.
Auto-Search Fallback Method
If none of the listed codes work (it happens with unusual model years), most universal remotes offer an auto-search mode:
Turn on your LG TV.
Press and hold Setup until the LED light turns on.
Press the TV button.
Press the Power button repeatedly, pausing about 1 second between presses, while pointing the remote at the TV.
When the TV turns off, immediately press Setup to lock the code.
Turn the TV back on and test Input, Volume, and Channel buttons.
This auto-search can take a couple of minutes since it cycles through hundreds of codes, but it usually finds one that works.
If you'd prefer to get the official LG replacement remote instead, here's how to pair an LG remote to your LG TV.
Method 7: Use a Game Console Controller to Switch LG TV Input
If you have a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch already plugged into your LG TV via HDMI, you might be able to switch to the console's input without touching the TV at all. This relies on HDMI-CEC (SIMPLINK) being enabled.
PlayStation Method
Make sure SIMPLINK is enabled on your TV (see Method 4).
Press the PS button on your DualSense controller.
The PS5 wakes from rest mode, sends a CEC signal, and the TV auto-switches to the PS5's HDMI input.
Xbox Method
With SIMPLINK enabled, press the Xbox button on your controller.
The console wakes, and the TV follows - switching to the correct HDMI port.
For more about connecting your Xbox, see our guide on how to connect Xbox to your LG TV.
I confirmed this works with a PS5 connected to HDMI 3 on an LG C3. The TV switched input automatically within about 4 seconds of pressing the PS button.
Important Limitations
This method only switches to the console's input. You can't use a game controller to switch to a different HDMI port - say, from the PS5 input to your Roku input. It's a one-directional trick. The console must also already be physically connected, and SIMPLINK must be enabled before you lose your remote.
Still, for gamers who primarily need to get to their console, this is the fastest possible method. While you're at it, consider optimizing your setup to reduce input lag on your LG TV for a better gaming experience.
Method 8: Use an IR Blaster App on Your Phone
Some smartphones have a built-in infrared (IR) transmitter - the same technology traditional TV remotes use. If your phone has one, you can use your phone to control your LG TV without WiFi, without the ThinQ app, and even with non-smart LG TVs.
Compatible Phones
IR blasters are found in select Android phones. Most modern iPhones and recent Samsung Galaxy phones do not include one. Phones with IR blasters include:
Xiaomi - Many current models (Xiaomi 14, Redmi Note series, POCO series)
Huawei - Select models (P series, Mate series)
Samsung Galaxy - S6 and earlier (Samsung dropped IR blasters after 2015)
Some TCL, Honor, and Vivo phones
Setup
Check if your phone has an IR blaster - look for a small dark lens on the top edge of the phone.
Open your phone's built-in remote app (Xiaomi phones have Mi Remote; Huawei uses Smart Remote). Or download a free IR remote app like ASmart Remote IR.
Select LG TV from the device list.
Point your phone's top edge at the TV's IR sensor (usually at the bottom-center of the front panel).
Use the virtual remote interface to switch inputs.
I tested Mi Remote on a Xiaomi 14 and successfully changed the input on an older LG 43-inch LED TV that doesn't have WiFi capabilities. Response was instant.
When to Use This vs. ThinQ
The IR blaster method works without WiFi and with non-smart LG TVs. ThinQ requires WiFi and a Smart TV. If you're somewhere without internet access and happen to have a Xiaomi phone, this is your solution.
Method 9: How to Change Input on a Hotel LG TV (Bypass Locked Settings)
This is the scenario zero competitors address - and one of the most frustrating situations you'll encounter. You're in a hotel room, your laptop or gaming console is HDMI-ready, and the LG TV's remote has no Input button. The hotel has locked it down.
Why Hotel TVs Lock Inputs
Hotels use LG's Pro:Centric hospitality platform or Hotel Mode to restrict guest access to input switching, settings menus, and certain channels. This is done for liability, content control, and to prevent guests from accidentally changing configurations that affect the next guest's experience. If you've ever wondered how to turn off hotel mode on an LG TV, you're far from alone.
Workaround 1 - Try the Physical Button Menu
Some hotel LG TVs leave physical button navigation functional even when the remote is restricted. Follow the Method 1 steps: find the joystick or power button, press it to open the quick menu, and navigate to Input. On about half of the hotel TVs I've encountered, this worked despite the remote being locked.
Workaround 2 - Unplug the Network Cable
Check behind the TV for an Ethernet cable or coaxial cable connecting the TV to a hotel control box or wall plate. The Pro:Centric system often delivers its restrictions over this network connection. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and try changing the input via the physical buttons again. In many cases, disconnecting the data cable disables Hotel Mode restrictions.
After a recent hotel stay, I successfully accessed HDMI input on a hotel LG TV after unplugging the coaxial cable from the rear panel. The TV reverted to standard behavior within about a minute.
Workaround 3 - HDMI-CEC Auto-Switch
Connect your laptop, streaming stick, or console to an available HDMI port and power it on. If the TV has HDMI-CEC enabled (some hotel configurations leave it active), the TV may auto-switch to that HDMI input even with Hotel Mode on. This is the least reliable workaround, but it costs nothing to try. For other ways to stream content, see our guide on how to cast to a hotel LG TV.
Workaround 4 - Universal Remote
A universal remote programmed with LG codes (see Method 6) may override the hotel remote's restrictions. The hotel's custom remote typically sends limited commands, but a universal remote sends standard LG IR signals - including the Input command. Travelers who frequently stay in hotels sometimes carry a small universal remote for exactly this reason.
Workaround 5 - Ask Hotel Staff
If no technical workaround succeeds, request the master remote or ask the front desk to switch the input for you. Most hotels accommodate this request, especially if you explain you want to connect a laptop for work. I've had a 100% success rate simply asking politely.
A note about hotel policies: Modifying hotel TV settings may technically violate the hotel's terms. These workarounds are provided for legitimate purposes like connecting a work laptop or personal streaming device. Please be respectful - restore any settings you change, and reconnect any cables you unplugged before checkout.
If the hotel TV appears to be in retail demo mode instead of hotel mode, here's how to get your LG TV out of demo mode.

LG TV Input Not Changing? Troubleshooting Common Issues
Even with the right method, things sometimes don't work on the first attempt. Here are the five most common issues and their fixes.
Issue 1: Power Button Won't Open the Input Menu
If pressing the joystick or power button does nothing, or only powers the TV off without showing a menu:
Try a quick, light tap rather than a press-and-hold. The menu triggers on a short press.
On B-type joysticks, try pulling the joystick toward you instead of pressing it straight in.
If the TV is in Hotel Mode, the physical buttons may be disabled. See Method 9.
If the TV isn't turning on at all, the issue may be power-related rather than input-related.
Issue 2: LG ThinQ App Won't Find the TV
Confirm your phone and TV are on the exact same WiFi network - not a guest network, and not 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz mismatch.
Restart both the TV (unplug for 30 seconds) and your phone.
Check that the TV is actually connected to WiFi - navigate via physical buttons to Settings → Network. If your LG TV keeps disconnecting from WiFi, that's a separate issue to fix first.
Update the ThinQ app to the latest version, or try clearing the cache on your LG TV and the app.
Issue 3: Input Changed But Screen Is Black / "No Signal"
This is almost always an HDMI handshake failure - the TV and source device aren't communicating properly.
Unplug the HDMI cable from both the TV and the source device, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect firmly.
Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
Ensure the source device is powered on and actively outputting a signal.
Try a different HDMI cable - damaged cables are a common culprit.
When I encountered a black screen after switching to HDMI 2 on an LG B3, unplugging and reseating the HDMI cable fixed it instantly. If this is a recurring problem, see our full guide on why your LG TV says no signal.
Issue 4: TV Stuck on One Input and Won't Switch
Try a soft reboot first: unplug the TV from power, wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in. You can also reboot your LG TV or restart it through the settings if accessible.
If the issue persists, a factory reset usually resolves it. On some models, press and hold the power button for 10–15 seconds to initiate a hard reset. See our guide on how to hard reset an LG TV for model-specific instructions.
Check for a pending software update - firmware bugs occasionally cause input-switching issues.
Issue 5: No WiFi, No Physical Buttons Responding
You're in the toughest spot. Your options narrow to:
USB mouse + physical power button (if the TV has a USB port)
Universal remote programmed with LG codes
IR blaster phone app (if your phone has an IR transmitter)
If absolutely nothing works - physical buttons unresponsive, no WiFi, no USB mouse, no universal remote - contact LG's 24/7 support chat for model-specific guidance. Some LG TV models have obscure button combinations not documented in standard guides.
How to Rename and Manage Input Sources on Your LG TV
Once you've regained control over your TV inputs, take two minutes to label them. This small step makes future input-switching dramatically easier - especially when using the joystick button, where you can't see which device is on which HDMI port.
How to Rename Inputs
Press the Home button (or navigate to the Home Dashboard via physical buttons or ThinQ app).
Hover over an input source at the top of the screen.
Click the pencil/edit icon that appears.
Type a custom name - "PlayStation 5," "Roku," "Laptop," "Sound Bar," etc.
Confirm the change.
On newer WebOS versions, you can also access this through Settings → General → Devices → External Device Manager.
Hide Unused Inputs
Some WebOS versions allow hiding inputs that have no connected device. This declutters the input menu, so you only see sources you actually use. Navigate to the Home Dashboard → Input Settings → toggle off any unused inputs.
After renaming my HDMI inputs, switching via the joystick became noticeably faster. Instead of cycling through "HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3" and guessing, I could immediately identify "Roku" vs. "PS5." Worth the two minutes.
While you're customizing, you might also want to personalize your TV's screensaver settings to match your preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions: LG TV Input Without Remote
Can I change input on my LG TV if it's not a Smart TV?
Yes. Non-smart LG TVs support input switching through the physical buttons on the TV (look for the Input/Source button or use the joystick), a universal remote programmed with LG codes, or an IR blaster app on a compatible phone. The ThinQ app, voice control, and USB mouse methods require a Smart TV with WebOS.
Where is the input button on my LG TV?
On older LG TVs (pre-2016), the Input button is part of a row of physical buttons along the bottom edge or rear panel. On newer LG TVs (2016 and later), there's no dedicated Input button. Instead, a single joystick-style button located under the LG logo or on the center-bottom rear panel opens a menu where you select the Input option.
How do I change input on an LG hotel TV?
To change input on a hotel LG TV with locked settings, try these approaches in order: (1) use the physical joystick button on the TV, (2) unplug the Ethernet or coaxial cable behind the TV to disable hotel mode, (3) connect an HDMI-CEC device and power it on, (4) use a universal remote with LG codes, or (5) request the master remote from hotel staff. See our full hotel LG TV input guide for step-by-step details.
Why does my LG TV keep switching inputs on its own?
SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) is almost certainly the cause. When enabled, SIMPLINK auto-switches the TV input whenever a connected HDMI device powers on or sends a CEC signal. To stop this, disable SIMPLINK in Settings → General → Devices → HDMI Settings → SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) → Off. The exact path depends on your WebOS version (see the table in Method 4).
What's the cheapest way to replace a lost LG TV remote?
The cheapest replacement is the free LG ThinQ app on your smartphone - it's a fully functional remote. If your TV isn't a Smart TV, a basic universal remote costs $5–$15 at most retailers. The official LG Magic Remote runs between $30 and $70 depending on your TV model and generation.
Can I use a Bluetooth keyboard to change input on my LG TV?
Some LG Smart TVs support Bluetooth keyboards, but compatibility is inconsistent across models. A USB keyboard connected via a wired cable or USB dongle is far more reliable. Check your TV's Bluetooth support in Settings → Connection → Bluetooth to confirm whether your model accepts keyboard input.
Does the LG ThinQ app work on all LG TVs?
No. The ThinQ app works with LG Smart TVs running WebOS 3.5 or newer (approximately 2017 models and later). Both the TV and your phone must be connected to the same WiFi network. Older non-smart LG TVs are not compatible. If you're having trouble connecting, see how to turn on WiFi on your LG TV first. You can also check our guide on how to add your TV to LG ThinQ for detailed compatibility info.
How do I check my LG TV's WebOS version?
Navigate to Settings → All Settings → General → About This TV. The software version is displayed there. You can also estimate the WebOS version from your TV's model year: 2020 models typically run WebOS 5.0, 2021 models run WebOS 6.0, and 2022+ models use the rebranded naming (WebOS 22, 23, 24, 25). Knowing your version helps ensure you follow the correct settings paths for features like SIMPLINK and ThinQ compatibility. If an update is available, consider updating your LG TV's firmware for the latest features and bug fixes.
Never Get Stuck Without a Remote Again
You now have nine verified ways to change input on an LG TV without a remote - more than any other guide available.
Here's what matters most: physical buttons (Method 1) solve the immediate problem in 30 seconds. The LG ThinQ app (Method 2) is your best permanent replacement. And if your TV isn't a Smart TV, a universal remote (Method 6) costs less than a fast-food meal and works with every LG TV manufactured in the last two decades.
My strongest recommendation? Set up the ThinQ app right now as a backup, even if you have a working remote today. It takes five minutes and saves you from this situation entirely in the future. While you're at it, enable SIMPLINK so your connected devices auto-switch the input. These two steps together make a lost remote a minor inconvenience rather than a real problem.
LG TVs offer more ways to control them than almost any other brand, which is part of what makes LG a good TV choice. Once you've regained control, consider setting up screen sharing on your LG TV as another feature that works great without the original remote.
